Reefer Service Inc. was founded in 1982 by John VanderWal, who brought with him years of experience as a Technician in the transport refrigeration industry and as a Reefer Technician for a local dairy. Recognizing a need for more personalized and dedicated service in the refrigeration sector, John embarked on his entrepreneurial journey, starting the company with just a van, proudly displaying the slogan "We come to where you are!"
In those early days, John's commitment to quality service saw him traveling to various customer locations during the day, and spending evenings in a rental garage, meticulously rebuilding components. His wife, Jan, played an integral role in the business from the very beginning. As a versatile and dedicated partner, Jan managed multiple roles, from secretary to treasurer, and even parts runner, all while raising their three children, who would later become involved in the business.
Through hard work, dedication, and a family-centered approach, John and Jan built Reefer Service Inc. into the respected and reliable company it is today.
Our History
In 1986, we reached a significant milestone with the purchase of our first building on 37th Avenue in Hudsonville, Michigan. This acquisition marked the beginning of our growth journey, providing us with a solid foundation to expand our services. As our business flourished, we brought on board some of the industry's finest technicians—many of whom remain with us to this day. While our Service Trucks remained a hallmark of our reputation, the new facility gave us the stability to further enhance our offerings.
In 1991, we were proud to become a Dealer for Carrier Transicold. This partnership allowed us to offer top-quality products, backed by the expertise of our exceptional technicians, all driven by our unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction. It was a pivotal moment in our journey, one that propelled us forward with even greater momentum.
By 2002, our continued growth led us to acquire our current building—a beautiful 27,000 sq. ft. facility that we knew was destined to be ours. This state-of-the-art shop is designed with our customers in mind, featuring drive-through bays, a well-stocked parts room, and a comfortable lounge for our drive-in customers. Our team, boasting over 155 years of combined experience, includes factory-trained technicians and parts personnel dedicated to providing the highest level of service.
Our staff includes six Master Technicians and six "Top Gun" Technicians, who achieved first place in their training classes. In addition to our in-shop services, we operate four fully-equipped service trucks, ready to assist you at your location, any time of day or night. We are also honored to have received the prestigious "Dealer of the Year" award from Carrier Transicold, a testament to our commitment to excellence.
